Rob Schreier Named “Voice of the Volcanoes”

Rob Schreier joins the Volcanoes from Athens , Ohio, and will become Director of Broadcasting for the Volcanoes. Rob is in the final year of a five-year dual degree program in Broadcast Journalism and Sport Management at Ohio University . Currently serving as the Sports Director of WXTQ and WATH in Athens , Rob has over three seasons of college and high school play-by-play experience. Additionally, Rob will serve as a broadcaster this spring for the Ohio University baseball team in preparation for broadcasting the Volcanoes this summer. Rob was born and raised in Boulder , Colorado , and continues to support the Colorado Buffaloes.

"We're excited to add Rob to our staff," said Jerry Walker, President and General Manager for the Volcanoes. "He brings a great deal of enthusiasm and a solid background in broadcasting to our team. We look forward to having him in the press box next summer broadcasting all the Volcanoes games. I'm sure our fans will enjoy his exciting and informative call of the game," concluded Walker.

Rep. Kim Thatcher

Well, the 2011 Session of the Oregon Legislature is now underway…sort of. Lawmakers were only at work for a few days this week to get things organized and they’ll be back ready to roll up their sleeves February 1st. In November, voters approved Ballot Measure 71 which now means lawmakers will hold annual sessions at the State Capitol.

This session offers many challenges and opportunities. There is a lot of heavy lifting to do this year, especially with a $3.5 billion dollar gap between the amount of tax revenue coming in to the state and the amount agencies say they need to maintain current programs.

The challenges come in juggling the budget. The opportunities come in looking for ways to revamp the way we do business in state government. If there was ever a time to establish solid priorities of government and match spending accordingly, this is it. If there was ever a time to reform PERS and other benefits provided to state workers, this is it. This list goes on but I think you get my point.

We also need to help our economy recover from the recession. Oregon businesses need the state to get out of the way. They need fewer regulations, taxes and fees; not more. I’m optimistic that the legislature will look for ideas to create the kind of tax and regulatory environment where businesses will create more jobs.

I’ve been encouraged by some of the changes our new Governor has proposed, but I am waiting to see how he will follow through. For the first time in state history the House of Representatives is split with 30 Republicans and 30 Democrats. The Co-Speakers have promised to work together on important issues and I hope that spirit of cooperation can be maintained through the difficult decisions ahead.

This week the list of committee assignments were distributed and I was honored to be named the Co-Chair of the new Joint Legislative Committee on Audits, Information Management & Technology. I expect this committee will be able to really drill down in certain areas of government accountability. I was also placed on the Joint Committee on Ways and Means, and selected to be Co-Vice Chair of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Services.

You’ll see a few of the bills I am sponsoring listed below. Please let me know if you are interested in these measures or others going through the legislative process.

Volcanoes to honor and recognize Extreme Makeover Home Edition Workers

EXTREME NIGHT ! On Opening Night, 2011, Volcanoes Stadium is expected to turn into a sea of blue t-shirts and white hard hats as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are making plans to honor all the thousands of volunteers who contributed to the Extreme Makeover project recently completed at the Oregon School for the Deaf in Salem . “This has been a significant project that has brought the whole community together,” said Volcanoes President Jerry Walker. “We’d like to honor and recognize all whom contributed and bring everyone back together in a fun and festive environment to celebrate their achievements.”

All volunteers who attend this game, wearing their blue Extreme Makeover shirt, will be admitted FREE and will be invited onto the field to participate in pre-game ceremonies. Rich Duncan, the General Contractor who completed the build, will throw out a ceremonial first pitch along with Ed Roberts from the Oregon School for the Deaf. A student, representing the school, will be invited to do the Ceremonial Running of the Bases prior to the game. In addition, the Extreme Makeover staff and production crew will be invited back to the community to participate in the event and the pre-game ceremonies.

"It is important to keep the momentum going, and for us all to remember and honor those who have the foresight and community spirit that can make fabulous dreams reality," added Walker.

The Volcanoes’ 2011 schedule is expected to be finalized by the end of October and the date for Opening Night will be set (expected to be on or about Friday, June 17th).

Extreme Home Makeover vehicles could be seen downtown last night parked by the Grand Hotel on trade and liberty streets. The public will be allowed to start viewing the process on Wednesday beginning at 8:00a.m.

Our Foremothers Lecture

Deanne Beausoleil and Jane Lieber Mays were on campus today at the Chemeketa Community College Theater 116, located in building 3. Deanne Beausoleil narrated the lecture about five of the women which are depicted in the collection on display in the Chemeketa Community College Art Gallery also located in building 3.
The women discussed in the lecture were artists and mothers in the 16th-18th centuries. The first women talked about was Elisbeth Vigee-Lebrun (1755-1842). The second woman discussed was Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750). The third artist and mother shared was Mary Beale (1642-1697). The fourth woman talked about was Anna Dorothea Therbusch-Lisiewska (1721-1782). The fifth woman discussed was Judith Leyster (1609-1660). After Deanne had finished the lecture the floor was opened for questions about the paintings , the artists, and the lives of the women presented. When the Questions finished Jane Lieber Mays mentioned another women in the show named Maria Sibylla Merian (1647- 1717), who had moved her family to South America to study bugs and a book was published recently and is now available with some of her works in the book.
The presentation ended with a thank you to the director of the Art Gallery, Kay Bunnenberg Boehmer. She was given a copy of the new book that was just released and flowers. Kay Bunnenberg Boehmer stated that she was going to have to go find a copy of the book. Now she has her copy.

Core Functions Bill Gets Legislative Hearing

(Salem) “We are going to have to reckon with reality and not continue business as usual. In other words, we need to focus our spending on the priorities,” explained State Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer, Newberg, St. Paul) today in front of the House Committee on Consumer Protection and Government Accountability during a hearing at the State Capitol.

Thatcher and several others gave the Committee several reasons to support House Bill 3614 which would set up a special taskforce to develop the Core Functions of State Government. “This is not about ideology but common sense and re-thinking how we budget,” said Thatcher.

“Government cannot and should not do everything. But we haven’t done a very good job of instructing our state legislature and state agencies exactly what our priorities are,” said Steve Buckstein, Senior Policy Advisory and founder of Cascade Policy Institute. “House Bill 3614 is a first step toward setting real priorities.”

The legislation is modeled after a successful program in Washington State created by former Governor Gary Locke. Thatcher told the Committee this afternoon, Washington was able to close a large gap in their state budget using a system of priorities of government. “They decided to approach their budget process in an innovative way and were able to work through their budget and not raise taxes while protecting government services.”

Several citizens testified in favor of HB 3614 including Mark Higgins of Newberg. He compared government spending to the way a family prioritizes its budget. “In our family we have to put our needs over our wants. I believe every responsible family does that.”

Earlier this week the revenue forecast was released which shows the state is more than $350 million short of what is needed to balance the budget. Thatcher noted, “this week’s revenue forecast is a good reminder of why we need to start prioritizing our spending in a different way, focusing on outcomes of programs rather than spending as we have been.”

State Representative Gene Whisnant (R-Sunriver), a co-sponsor of HB 3614 and former member of the legislature’s budget committee, said “this bill is the right thing to do especially given the tremendous budget challenges facing our state in the next year or so.”

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are very pleased to announce the appearance of former Cy Young winner, American League Most Valuable Player , 6-time Major League All-Star Pitcher, and three-time World Series Pitcher, Vida Blue, for the Volcanoes 3rd Annual Winter Sports Banquet to be held on Friday, February 12th, at the Keizer Civic Center , beginning at 6:00 PM.

Originally drafted by the Kansas City Athletics in the 2nd round in 1967, Vida was traded by the Athletics to the San Francisco Giants in 1978. In 1982, he joined the Kansas City Royals. Vida was again signed by the Giants in 1985, and ended his legendary career with the Giants in 1986.

Vida spent 17 years in the big leagues winning 209 games against just 161 losses for a .565 winning percentage. At age 21, he hurled a no-hitter against the Minnesota Twins. Blue was a member of the American League All-Star Team in 1971, 1975 and 1977, and a member of the National League All-Star Team in 1978, 1980 and 1981. In 1971, Vida’s best season, he was 22-4, won the Cy Young Award and the American League Most Valuable Player with an ERA of 1.82, 8 shutouts, and 301 strikeouts. Vida pitched in the 1972, 1973 and 1974 World Series. Vida ended his career with an ERA of just 3.27, struck out 2,175 batters, won 10 or more games in eleven different seasons including a span of 8 consecutive years (1973-1980).

The banquet will begin at 6:00pm with a social hour and silent auction, followed by a buffett dinner at 7:00pm and a talk by Vida Blue. Art Gallery at Chemeketa Community College

Chemeketa Community College opened a new show in the Art Gallery located in the main floor of building 3. Two artists, Jodie Raborn and Gabriella Soraci, have pieces on display. Gabriella and Jodie were at the gallery for the reception at noon today. Friends,
As you know we are facing yet another statewide vote on raising taxes in Oregon. Earlier this year on the floor of the House I spoke in opposition to these tax measuresexplaining that "you can't tax your way out of a recession." Obviously the tax and spend liberals at the capitol were not listening.
I have faith that Oregon voters will see through all the propaganda and do the right thing by voting NO on Measures 66 and 67. There are many misleading statements being made in the media so let me shed a little light on the facts.
In my other life outside the legislature, I run two small businesses. If these measures pass, my companies, just like thousands of others across the state, may have to layoff workers or cut wages. Under current law many small businesses pay a $10 filling fee. However, under these measures they could face hidden sales tax, paying tens of thousands of dollars in taxes even if they don't make a profit. Those costs are passed along to you and I, the consumers.
The sky will not fall if these measures fail, the legislature will have to make some tough decisions and prioritize how they spend tax dollars more carefully. There are reserve funds available to cover some of the projected shortfall. Overall our state is spending is up nearly 10%. How many of us got a 10% raise during this down economy? It's time to say NO to more taxes and YES to better governing.

Early Morning Chase

At about 5:15am this morning, a Salem Police Officer reported a vehicle speeding south on Hawthorne St. The pursuit of the vehicle lead officers south to Mission St and then to I-5 South. Once on I-5 the pursuit reached speeds reported at about 90 mph. The vehicle was registered to a Hispanic male with warrant. Salem police chased the car all the way to the Jefferson exit. The driver, a male, bailed out just after getting off the interstate Salem police took him into custody shortly after that point. The chase had ended safely by 5:35 am.

Break-In Reported

At about 11:00pm Sunday night, Marion County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a possible break in at Auburn Elementary School in NE Salem. The deputies had a perimeter set up by 11:20pm. Prostar Security responded as they are a contract security company for Salem-Keizer School District. A Prostar officer arrived at 11:33pm with keys to the school building. At 11:40pm deputies entered the school and began the process of clearing the building. Officers cleared the building and finished up at the school around 12:30am Monday morning.

The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) has announced that the “26th Annual
National Night Out (NNO) program will culminate on Tuesday, August 4, 2009.
Any municipality, law enforcement agency, crime prevention
organization, community group or neighborhood that is interested in
participating is invited to contact NATW now to receive information on National
Night Out 2009. (Note: The State of Texas will be celebrating NNO on October 6th this
year.)
There is no cost to register. Once registered with NATW, local coordinators receive an
organizational kit full of ‘how-to’ materials including planning suggestions, sample new
releases, artwork, and promotional guides – and interim updates throughout the year.
NNO 2008 involved 37 million people in 15,449 communities from all 50 states, U.S.
territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. National Night Out 2009 is
expected to be the largest ever. NNO is sponsored by NATW in partnership with
Target.
National Night Out, a year-long community building campaign, is designed to: (1)
Heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in,
local anticrime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community

Presidential Speech

As a Senior Advisor to the President, I'm here in Cairo, Egypt where I watched President Obama deliver an unprecedented speech calling for a new beginning for the United States and Muslim communities around the world. We all know that there has been tension between the United States and some Muslim communities. But, as the President said this morning, if all sides face the sources of tension squarely and focus on mutual interests, we can find a new way forward. The President outlined some big goals for this new beginning in his speech -- including disrupting, dismantling, and defeating violent extremism. Basic Budget Balancing Act May 23, 2009
"The problem is not that people are taxed too little, the problem is that government spends too much." Remember that saying from the late President Ronald Reagan? I think it still applies today when we step back and take an objective look at the Oregon State Budget.
I know budget babble can be boring, but it's really important for Oregonians to get a grip on what's going on here before they face hundreds of millions of dollars in new taxes. Grab your Excedrin and let's see if I can lay it out for you in as simple terms possible.
First, the current two-year state budget is $15.1 billion (with a "B"). That's the amount established for state agencies to maintain all the services they provide from July 2007-June 2009. Keep in mind we had nearly $3 billion in extra revenue to spread around on new programs and 1200 new workers in the last budget.
I joined several other conservative legislators in warning folks that this level of spending would just bloat state government to an unsustainable level - translation? There was no way income tax and lottery dollars could keep churning out this level of revenue. Something would have to give; something would have to be cut. Did legislative leaders listen? No.
Fast forward to today. The economy went in the tank. Unemployment skyrocketed to 12% and legislative leaders are now talking about cutting $2 billion out of the new state budget for July 2009-June 2011. Why? First they assume state programs will need $16.7 billion to continue present operations. Second, only $13.7 billion in revenue is expected to come in the door for the next budget cycle.
To close the multi-billion dollar gap, legislative budget leaders plan to use some of that magic federal stimulus money, a few reserve funds and, you got it, "raise taxes." Remember, taxes are the liberal's answer to close that multibillion dollar gap. Because to them this is about what they "think" agencies need to operate versus reality.
Why do we assume that starting in July all state programs need an automatic 10%-20% more money? Why not keep spending levels the same and add in a little for targeted areas like services for people with disabilities and low-income seniors? What about a few more dollars for K-12 classrooms? Perhaps some extra money to keep bad guys locked up in prison?
It's all about rethinking the way we approach the state budget. Prioritize the core functions and cut those that are not essential. That's what the Back to Basics Budget Plan is all about and you can check it out by clicking on this link here.
This plan looks at what we spend now, what is projected to come in, uses reserves and other funds to cover the additional needs in the areas I mentioned before. You can't tax your way out of a recession. And massive cuts to critical programs when you have piles of reserves sitting around are not right either. Sure it sounds pretty cut and dry but it is a lot more complicated than that. I'm just giving you the big picture.
So when you see stories in the news about 1,700 layoffs of state workers proposed by legislative leaders, remember the 1,200 new employees that were just hired in the past couple years. When they threaten to reduce the number of kids in Headstart, ask if this is really a "cut" in the current amount of funding or is it just a "reduction in the increase" they had hoped to get?
For example, the total amount the legislature approved for spending on "administration" for the entire state budget for 2007-09 was $189 million dollars. That's $6 million less than the $195 million the current budget leaders are planning to spend and it's $17 million less than what they think is an "essential" level of spending. So we're spending more actual dollars but it's somehow a cut?
Finally, when you hear legislators talk about how vital it is to increase the tax burden on wealthy individuals and corporations, think about whether increases are needed in the first place and who is really going to pay? Probably consumers through higher prices, and workers through job losses.
Rather than reshape the way we deliver government services through real reforms, legislative leaders expect Oregon taxpayers to keep shelling out more and more to feed the machine. Enough. There are better ways. See my recent column in NW Conservative Magazine. Click here.

The SALEM-KEIZER VOLCANOES are proud to announce that baseball legend DON LARSEN will be coming to Volcanoes Stadium on Thursday, June 25. Mr. Larsen’s appearance will headline “Legends Night,” an annual special event at the Stadium. Mr. Larsen will be signing free autographs on the concourse for approximately one hour before the game. After throwing out the honorary first pitch, Mr. Larsen will continue signing autographs, and meeting fans, during the first several innings of the game.

Thursday’s game is between the Volcanoes and the Boise Hawks (Chicago Cubs affiliate) and starts at 6:35 p.m. Gates will open at 5:30 PM.

Don Larsen played major league baseball from 1953 to 1967. On October 8, 1956, he became the only player in baseball history to pitch a perfect game in a World Series. Mr. Larsen played with eight different teams during his career, but is best known for his five seasons with the New York Yankees. It was with the Yankees that Don Larsen pitched his perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers that helped the Yankees capture World Series Championship in 1956. Larson played with such greats as Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Gil McDougald, and Billy Martin. Mr. Larsen also played two and a half seasons with the San Francisco Giants (1962-4), the Volcanoes’ Major League Affiliate.

Rep Thatcher Supports Small Businesses – Opposes New Taxes
( Salem ) Thousands of small business owners will be hit by $733 million in new tax hikes approved by the Oregon House of Representatives today. During debate on the House Floor, State Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer, St. Paul , Newberg) said, “we can’t tax our way out of a recession.”

Representative Thatcher voted against House Bill 3405 which raises the corporate tax to 8% up from 6.6% on companies with over $250,000 in corporate income. The measure increases the corporate minimum tax up to $10,000 depending on annual sales. She also opposed House Bill 2649, a measure to raise personal income taxes on individual taxpayers from 9% to 11% if they make over $125,000 and joint filers making more than $250,000.

She pointed out these tax increases will not just impact profits, but also total sales. Businesses could be on the hook for thousands and thousands of dollars in taxes, even when they lose money.”

“All these taxes trickle down to the individual. Think about the multiplier effect,” added Thatcher. “Services used by every Oregonian will now have a hidden sales tax. The banks, grocery stores, insurance companies, gas stations – services used by everyday Oregonians – will now have to include the cost of covering these taxes.

Some advocates for the measures call these “small” or “minor” tax increases. However, the taxpayers footing the bill will see up to a 22% increase in the tax rates.

As a small business owner herself, Thatcher is concerned about the impact of these measures on her counterparts in the private sector. She explained they might do less business or move out of state to avoid paying the higher taxes imposed by this legislation.

Representative Thatcher spoke against the measures saying, “if those businesses are forced to pay more taxes, then there is less disposable income for businesses to use to hire workers and they may have to lay off workers.”

Oregon has the second highest unemployment rate in the country and with this new income tax bracket; the state will have the highest personal income taxes in the nation. These are permanent increases in the tax code and Thatcher believes they send the wrong message to businesses considering moving to Oregon .

Finally, Thatcher wondered what would happen if these bills are referred to the ballot and are rejected by voters. “What is Plan B? How will we keep services going without all this new revenue?” She has advocated using some of the billions of dollars the state has in reserves to cover critical needs in the state budget.

Stan Davey Auto Show

Due to the rain, not as many vehicles turned out for the car show that was expecting about forty vehicles. The car show started at 10:00 a.m. this morning and will run through 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. At 10:45 the show had six vehicles registeredfor show. The oldest vehicle being a 1929 Sedan. The newest a 2000 Ford Mustang.

Chemeketa Community College is doing the annual car bash and were donated a late 1980's Mazda 323 hatchback. The cost to take the hammer to the car is a dollar a hit. The hopes are a totaled nonrepairable finish by 3;00 p.m.

“Administration: JUST SAY YES to a fair and dignified contract”, a quoted flyer given out to passersby in the building 2 commons. Another flyer stated,”WORKING WITHOUT A CONTRACT Since July 2008.”
The Administration requests:
Workload to increase in instructional hours for full time teaching staff from 45 to 48 teaching hours
Elimination of continuing online stipend
Salaries less than sister colleges and continuing to fall for faculty
Part-time instructors get no benefits
A full-time member to be defined as .81 Full-Time Employee (FTE) or above (Instead of .5 FTE or above, as it stands now).
Today is the next mediation meeting where the most recent Chemeketa Faculty Association proposal will be discussed. Faculty was reminded to wear red shirts. Buttons were given out that state, “Just Say Yes.” Picket and other signs were given to faculty before marching through building 2 and out onto the grounds. As they walk the route the Faculty chanted “STEP UP TO THE PLATE, JUST NEGOTIATE” and “FAIR CONTRACT NOW.” The demonstration leads to building 3, where the meeting is being held.

The Volcanoes 2nd Annual Winter Sports Banquet will be held on Friday, January 30th, at the Cascade Hall of the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem, and you're invited to attend. High Speed Pursuit

At about 1:15 a.m. Salem Police were engaged in a pursuit on Lancaster Drive. Officers were pursuing a Chevy Caprice northbound on Lancaster at speeds over 95 m.p.h. Officers laid stop sticks and the vehicle hit them puncturing a front tire. The driver kept going and head north on Portland Road. The car crashed out in a field just outside of Salem. Officers took two suspects into custody. Salem Police called the owner of the car and found out that the vehicle was stolen.

West Salem Snowfall

West Salem has so far this week received at least 8 inches of snow and ice. The streets are covered with fresh snow and ice. Trees and shrubs are falling over do to the weight on the branches from the ice and snow. The City of Salem, last night, recommended that you only travel out if you have to. The Oregon Department of Transportation recommends that drivers carry chains even if you have 4X4 and snow tires. The main roads are snow packed and icy.

Natural Gas Leak at WalMart

The WalMart on Turner Road South last night had to be evacuated as a forklift accidentally broke a natural gas line. Customers and employees were rushed out of the building into the cold night for about an hour while crews came in to fix the problem.

Statue Unveiled

Statue of Governor Tom McCall was unveiled today in Salem at Riverfront Park. The statue of the governor depicts him coming out of the water with fly fishing pole in one hand and steelhead fish in the other. The statue is located at the start of the 3/4 mile track on the north side of the park by the trail down to the public dock. The son of Tom McCall, Tad McCall, and two of Oregon's Governors unveiled the statue at about 11:20 a.m.

185 chairs were set up for the ceremony most under the canopy. The ones outside the tent were for the West Salem Band. Sixth Grade Students from Toledo Elementary School were in attendance for their part of how the statue came to be. Over 300 people turned out for the ceremony. On the stage was Governors Ted Kulongoski and John Kitzhaber; Mayor, Janet Taylor; US District Judge James Redden; and Former Secretary of State, Norma Paulus.

The students, as fifth graders under the direction from their teacher, gathered up bottles and cans for recycling and raised $175.00 to be donated toward the statues funding of which was all private funds. Governor McCall was an environmentalist and very into preserving our state privileges like public beaches, bike paths, and bottle deposit to encourage recycling.

My DARE Report

By Christine Hannegan 5th Grade Teacher Over the last nine or ten years I have watched some remarkable men teach important skills in my classroom. I believe the lessons taught by Salem’s DARE Officers are crucial and fundamental to each and every student that participates. Learning to make healthy choices in a culture as complicated as ours could be the most realistic and lasting learning a student ever does. I feel that the most important lesson that I have learned in D.A.R.E. is about teaching and practicing refusal skills. It is one thing for a child to think or say that he or she would be confident enough to refuse drugs or alcohol and a whole different thing to practice those skills. Refusing or redirecting a friend is not that easy! Every year it seems that time is cut from the D.A.R.E. program. So with less time available there is less chance to cover important skills. As a teacher in our ever changing society I feel a responsibility to prepare our young students to live in a culture that is unstable and unforgiving. When young people get off track it is very difficult to get back on track and ultimately lead happy and productive lives. Without the important learning that takes place in the D.A.R.E. program I feel our students are not prepared for the challenging and stressful aspects of their futures. They have grown up watching television programs where adults that they idolize, party and drink to relax and socialize. They are bombarded by advertisements for alcohol and the actors are beautiful and look healthy and happy. So I believe our young students need to understand the harmful effects and consequences of drug and alcohol use. This is the task that our D.A.R.E. officers have to accomplish. I admire and appreciate all of their hard work in this undertaking. Hats off to the men in blue for helping our children to make healthy choices! About the Author: Christine Hannegan has been an educator for more than thirty years. She has been a teacher at Elementary, Middle, and High schools in Oregon. In 1991 Christine transferred to the Salem Keizer School District. She has been teaching 5th grade at McKinley Elementary School for more than ten years. Christine is truly a remarkable teacher. She demonstrates a sincere interest in the lives of her students. Each week when I come to her class her students are always prepared. She actively participates in the lessons from the D.A.R.E. The Oregon D.A.R.E. Officers Association (O.D.O.A.) is proud to announce the results of this years awards nominations. Officer Dave Driscoll of the Salem Police Department was selected as the D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year! Ofc. Driscoll has been a Police Officer for more than 27 years. He has spent the last seven years teaching D.A.R.E. Ofc. Driscoll teaches D.A.R.E. in fourteen different elementary schools. That’s approximately 1,200 students a year! He makes presentations to the Middle and High Schools as well as private groups like the Boy Scouts of America. When he is not teaching, Ofc. Driscoll is the first to volunteer for after hours presentations during the week and on the week ends. Ofc. Driscoll is continually promoting the D.A.R.E. program and tirelessly working to help keep kids safe. He is also the Sgt At Arms of the O.D.O.A. McDonald’s of Salem and Keizer was selected as the Supporter of the Year! They began sponsoring the Salem Police D.A.R.E. program in 1999. McDonald’s has consistently donated $5,000 or more every year. Their donations to the Salem Police D.A.R.E. program total over $41,000! In Carlton, this afternnon a couple of hundred people gathered for class reunions from 1953-59 for Yamhill-Carlton High School. People brought their families. The Carlton lower park front covered picnic area was filled and people tried to find seating whereever they could pitch a chair. Bill and Chelsea Clinton Visit Salem

At Riverfront Park downtown Salem was roped off and made ready for the former president and first daughter to visit. People started filtering in at about 11:00 a.m. for the 2:00 p.m. rally. At 1:00 p.m. about 200 people had arrived. At 1:20 p.m. Salem Police officers swept the area around the ampatheather. By 1:30 p.m. the amount of people had doubled. The Hillary Clinton staff through out shirts to the crowd. The rally started at 2:00 p.m. Erika Alexander spoke as the traveling celebrity. Chelsea was the first to talk following the governor's introduction. Chelsea stated, "her mom would be a better president then her dad was." Bill Clinton stated, "the media only shows one side, the media is bias." Bill has visited 26 communities in Oregon during the campaign. My Friends,
We are all aware that next January, the political leadership of the United States will change significantly when a new president is sworn into our nation's highest elected office. It is important that the candidates who seek to lead our country after President Bush define their objectives and what they plan to achieve not with vague language but with clarity.
What I want to do is take a little time to describe what I hope to have achieved at the end of my first term as president. I cannot guarantee I will have achieved these things, but I am presumptuous enough to think I would be a good president.
By January 2013, at the end of my first term as president, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom. The Iraq War has been won and Iraq is a functioning democracy. The threat from a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan has been greatly reduced but not eliminated and there has not been a major terrorist attack in the United States since September 11, 2001.
The United States has experienced several years of robust economic growth and Americans again have confidence in their economic future. Congress has lowered taxes and passed fundamental tax reform offering a choice in how taxes are filed. Americans, who through no fault of their own, lost jobs in the global economy they once believed were theirs for life, are assisted by reformed unemployment insurance and worker retraining programs.
Public education in the United States is much improved and test scores and graduation rates are rising everywhere in the country. Health care has become more accessible to more Americans than at any other time in history.
The United States is well on the way to independence from foreign sources of oil; progress that has not only begun to alleviate the environmental threat posed from climate change, but has greatly improved our security as well.
Scores of judges have been confirmed to the federal district and appellate courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, who understand that they were not sent there to write our laws but to enforce them.
Voluntary national service has grown in popularity in part because of the educational benefits used as incentives, as well as frequent appeals from the bully pulpit of the White House, but mostly because the young Americans understand that true happiness is much greater than the pursuit of pleasure, and can only be found by serving causes greater than self-interest.
This is the progress I want us to achieve during my presidency. These are the changes I am running for president to make. I want to leave office knowing that America is safer, freer and wealthier than when I was elected.
There are serious issues at stake in this election, and serious differences, but it should remain an argument among friends; each of us struggling to hear our conscience, and heed its demands. Each of us, despite our differences, united in our great cause and respectful of the goodness in each other. That is how most Americans treat each other. And it is how they want the people they elect to office to treat each other.
We cannot again leave our problems for another unluckier generation of Americans to fix after they have become even harder to solve. I'm not interested in partisanship that serves no other purpose than to gain a temporary advantage over our opponents. We are all compatriots. We are fellow Americans. I intend to prove myself worthy of the office, of our country and of your respect. I won't judge myself by how many elections I've won. I won't spend one hour of my presidency worrying more about my re-election than keeping my promises to the American people.
And now, I call on you to do your part in making this vision a reality. I am not presumptuous enough to think that I will be elected our next president without your help, and I humbly ask you today to make a contribution to my campaign of any amount to ensure my campaign is fully funded and able to take my message and vision directly to every American voter.

As Oregonians woke up this morning across our state, they were greeted by an onslaught of false negative attacks against me. Chuck Schumer and liberal Democrat leaders in Washington, D.C have poured more than $300,000 into their misleading television ad, and that is just in the first week.
You may have already seen these ads on TV. They hit the air today - and the National Democrats have now demonstrated that they will sink to any low, all in an effort to defeat me for purely political reasons.
I can't sit idly by and watch these Democrats from Washington, D.C. come into our state and attack my record. The only way we can stop them is to rise above the noise and talk directly to the voters of Oregon.

I heard on KATU you are going to spend $340,000 to find out what sidewalks need to be fixed. May I as a Salem tax payer give you an idea saving your and my money. We have Neighborhood Associations in most areas of Salem. If the city cordated with these associations by going to their meeting and asking each association to do a survey of the sidewalks in each area, it would save the money for concrete.

On March 22, a glorious Saturday morning in Arizona , the 2007 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes gathered as a team for the last time to receive their Championship Rings. In a ceremony attended by more than 120 players in San Francisco's minor league system (two-thirds of them former Volcanoes), Salem-Keizer co-owners Bill Tucker and Jerry Walker, manager Steve Decker and pitching coach Jerry Cram joined Bobby Evans, the Giants' Director of Player Personnel, to present the rings to each player individually. Our efforts to secure these protections depended upon critical support from Oregon's business community. As we move forward with the implementation of Oregon's equality laws, it's important to look back on where we've come from and how we got here. This year we are honoring individuals and business organizations that played a critical role in the passage of our 2007 pro-equality legislation. I'm thrilled to announce the recipients of our 15th Annual Oregonians Against Discrimination Business Leader Awards:
Bill Dickey, Witham & Dickey, The Oregon Business Association, The Portland Business AllianceThe Governor's Task Force on Equality.
In February 2006, Governor Kulongoski issued an Executive Order establishing the Governor's Task Force on Equality. The Task Force, which was composed of business and community leaders from across Oregon, conducted interviews across the state and gathered crucial testimony demonstrating the need for relationship recognition for committed couples and comprehensive legislation to protect all Oregonians from discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodation.
The Oregon Business Association and the Portland Business Alliance provided critical early endorsements of our bills during the 2007 legislative session. Their testimony ensured that lawmakers understood the bottom line: a diverse and inclusive workplace is good for business and good for Oregon.
Bill Dickey, of Witham & Dickey, has long been among Basic Rights Oregon's closest friends. Three weeks ago, I wrote to let you know that opponents of fairness in Oregon had filed ballot measures to try and repeal our new equality laws. Since that time, we've been dealing with the horrible remarks made by State Senator Gary George (R-McMinnville), one of the chief sponsors of this attack on equality. His hateful rhetoric has sent shockwaves through our state and our nation, inspiring many of you to provide critical financial support to our effort. Thank you.
We have also been deeply engaged in monitoring the process that Oregon's Secretary of State must go through to craft ballot titles for the measures. Our goal is to ensure that the ballot titles accurately inform voters about what these measures do and the impact they would have on Oregonians.
For instance, the domestic partnership repeal initiative not only takes away rights and protections Oregonians believe in, its effects would be retroactive and would ban any state or local law that legally recognizes same sex relationships. We know Oregonians believe in fairness and equality and will vote NO to defeat these measures -- as long as there is not a misleading ballot title.
But our elections work is not limited to these ballot measures. Our Equality PAC volunteers are working late nights this month to finalize our endorsements for the May 20th Primary Election.
With a heated primary just around corner - not to mention November's General Election - it's time to get our ducks in a row. It's time to make sure your voter registration is up to date. Have you moved since you last received a ballot? Do you need to update your party affiliation? The deadline to register is April 29, 2008, so don't wait. Visit this website to get registered!

Clinton Rally at Chemeketa

Hundreds of people gathered to hear Mr. Bill Clinton. People gather inside and outside of building 50 on Chemeketa Community College's campus to hear about Hillary Clinton's plans. He talked about College education assistance and the military and the need to end the War in Iraq. The fire marshal had the building to capacity and Marion County Sheriff Deputies assisted the Secret Services in maintaining the peace and flow of people. People parked anywhere they could some sat in their vehicles in the parking lot lanes just to hear the former president speak. The line of people at noon stretched two block and the rally did not start until about 2:00 p.m. Mr Clinton finished his speech at 3:00 p.m. He now moves on to Bend this afternoon. News Laws Coming After 2008 Special Session

Get ready for several new laws to take effect in the months ahead after the legislature convened in special session last month. The “test drive” for annual legislative sessions lasted for 15 week days in February. 109 bills were up for consideration; 73 passed. One of the changes I worked very hard to pass will tighten up eligibility for an Oregon drivers’ license. I also pushed for a measure to crack down on the revolving door of our state prison system.
Thatcher Supports 2nd Amendment in National Court Case
By early summer the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling on a landmark case which could have far reaching impacts for gun owners across the country. Representative Thatcher and State Representative Linda Flores joined a lawsuit to throw out Washington, D.C.’s 30-year-old ban on handguns.
New Government Accountability Backed by Thatcher
A new watchdog group, created by the Legislature, will go to work in July to oversee the bureaucracy in state government. Since last fall, Representative Thatcher has been pushing for the Committee on Performance Excellence to hold agencies responsible, and root out waste. Senate Bill 1099 will also improve state audits. Link up here for details.
Dueling Ballot Measures in November – Elections Integrity on The Line
This fall Oregonians will be asked to choose between two competing ballot measures dealing with property and drug crimes. One from a citizen’s initiative, the other placed there by the Legislature. Representative Thatcher did not feel the legislative proposal was tough enough on property and drug offenders so she opposed the plan. Perhaps even more important were tricky maneuvers by lawmakers to stack the deck in favor of this alternative measure jeopardizing the integrity of our elections process.

Volcanoes Erupt with Joy- Legislative Home Run
Opening Day, July 17th, 2008 has been declared “Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Baseball Day in recognition of the outstanding success and contributions of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes both on and off the field”. That’s the wording from House Concurrent Resolution 101 enacted last month. The Volcanoes were recently named National Minor League Team of the Year out of 184 teams across the country after winning back to back championships over the past two years. That makes them the most successful team in the 53-year history of the Northwest League of Professional baseball.

Obama Visits Salem

Senator Barack Obama visited Salem for a town hall meeting. The Salem Armory was expected to fill by on lookers to see the presidential candidate. 2300 tickets were given out in one and a half hours in downtown yesterday. About 3000 people turned out see the senator. The armory was checked thoroughly by Oregon State Troopers and Port of Portland K-9 Unit. The state bomb squad checked the area and the Salem buses out front. Salem Fire had members on hand. TSA provided security and scanned all individuals as they entered the armory. Demonstrators out front were holding signs about pro-choice and planned pregnancy. The signs showed pictures of dead embryos and babies in the womb with coins. At about 12:20 p.m. Obama staff said they were opening the doors to all even those with no tickets, at that time 25 people were in line. Six news crews had broadcast vehicles at the fairgrounds to get the footage for their stations. Senator Obama came and talked and then opened the floor for questions. Comment at the link below.

3 Car Accident in West Salem

This afternoon, Newzblast Media drove past a three vehicle accident. On scene was two city police officers and medics. A Ford Taurus was trying to make a turn on Wallace road when it was hit from the rear causing only minimal damage to it's bumper. the vehicle that struck the car was another Ford Taurus. The second Ford Taurus was rear ended by a Ford truck which cause severe damage to the rear of the car. The truck was into the rearend about half a trunk distance.
Salem Police Officers had the two lanes of northbound traffic closed and were routing driver into Westgate Church's turn lane and back across the meridian into the northbound lanes.

Pledge to Defend Equality

Basic Rights Oregon has learned that Oregon State Senator Fred Girod and State Rep. Sal Esquivel have filed an initiative to repeal Oregon's domestic partnership law. Outrageously, this time around the effort is being spearheaded by state legislators whose duty it is to protect Oregonians.

We cannot afford to be complacent. To put this divisive and discriminatory measure on the November 4, 2008 ballot, they will need to collect about 83,000 valid signatures by July 3.
We knew this was in the works. When our opponents failed to gather enough signatures for their referendum effort last year, they vowed to try again. We knew that even though we fought them - and won - in court, they would not give up. And here they are, with yet another divisive and discriminatory proposal, backed by out-of-state groups with deep pockets to fund their unpopular agenda.
We now know most Oregonians aren't buying what these guys are selling. Oregonians don't want to put their LGBT neighbors in harm's way. Oregonians believe that loving couples who have made a lifelong commitment to one another should have the basic security provided by domestic partnerships.
The groups in charge of last year's referendum efforts still have investigations pending against them in the Secretary of State's office. We don't think they are above cheating again - and we'll make sure they don't get away with breaking the law. Basic Rights Oregon will monitor their efforts to make sure they follow the rules.
At the same time, we will continue to mobilize fair-minded Oregonians across this state to take a stand for equality - through voter outreach, public education, media engagement, and grassroots organizing.
In addition to the anti-equality petition that would repeal Oregon's domestic partnership law, our opposition has filed another that would overturn legislation that makes discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations against the law. We know Oregonians support these laws, and we will do everything we can do stop these anti-equality activists from turning the clock back on equality.
Anti-equality interests need to collect nearly 83,000 signatures by July to put their petitions on the November 2008 ballot. Basic Rights Oregon is committed to closely monitoring the signature gathering process to ensure that all elections rules are followed.

Mayoral Debate

Tonight at Willamette University Lloyd Chapman, Chuck Bennett, and Diana Dickey fielded questions about their prospective positions. Lloyd Chapman is running for mayor against Janet Taylor who is the current mayor. Chuck Bennett is running for city counsel as well as Diana Dickey.
Janet Taylor was unable to attend due to another engagement with Special Olympics. Lloyd Chapman currently serves on the transit board. He has lived in the Salem area for 30 years. Mr. Chapman would like to see more interaction between neighborhood associations and the city counsel. He also discussed the importance of the mass transit and how it is currently inadequate for the town.
The two running for city counsel agreed about the transit system needing help. They talked about the traffic issue with regards to the bridges in Salem. Each of they candidates had a direct point of view. For more information about the debate see www.willamettelive.com

Hwy 22 West Accident

At about 2:00p.m. Dallas fire, Polk County Sheriff, and Oregon State Police were dispatched to an accident on Highway 22. The acident was at mile 13 west of Salem. The East bound lanes of traffic was closed and east bound traffic had to be rerouted on the west bound lanes. Flaggers were on hand to direct traffic to keep things moving while emergency crews worked.

The San Francisco Giants and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are very excited and proud to announce that longtime former Major League Manager, Tom Trebelhorn, a native Oregonian, has been named as the new Field Manager of the Volcanoes for the 2008 season.

Trebelhorn, born in Portland and a graduate of Cleveland High School (’66) and Portland State University (’70), began his professional playing career by signing a free-agent contract with Hawaill of the Pacific Coast League. During Trebelhorn's career he played in the Northwest League for Bend, Walla Walla, and Lewiston. He also played in Birmingham, Alabama and Burlington, Iowa.

"Treb" began his managing in 1975 and 1976 in Boise, 1977 in Modesto, 1979 in Batavia, NY, 1982 with AAA Portland Beavers, 1983 in Hawaii and 1985 in Vancouver, B.C.. Trebelhorn made his major league managerial debut with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1986, and was their skipper thru 1991. During this time, he was second on the Brewers all-time managerial list for games (819), and wins (422). He was named the 1987 Manager of the Year by Baseball America and Sports Illustrated.

In 1992, Tom joined the Chicago Cubs as their Bench Coach and Offensive Coordinator, and then was named Manager of the Cubs in 1994. Tom joined the Baltimore Orioles in 1996, and spent the last 12 years in various coaching positions within the Orioles system, including the past 7 seasons with the Orioles' Major League Club.

"Tom brings a vast wealth of playing, coaching and managing experience to the Volcanoes," said Volcanoes co-owner Jerry Walker. "We're excited to have someone with such an extensive coaching background, including many years at the big league level, to guide the Volcanoes -- imagine a former Major League Manager of the Year managing here in Salem-Keizer," concluded Walker. Bobby Evans, Director of Player Personnel for the San Francisco Giants said, "We feel Tom is a perfect fit for the Giants philosophy of player development. Assigning Trebelhorn to Salem-Keizer is a sign of our continued commitment to develop players in Salem-Keizer and to the Volcanoes organization.
"Tom will be a tremendous asset to the Giants minor league system. Our players will benefit from his years of experience both in player development and at the Major League level. I know the fans in Salem-Keizer will enjoy having him with the Volcanoes,"

Tom is married to Elizabeth and has four grown children. For many years, he has taught school in the Portland area during the off-season.

Local Teen Receives Top Honors from D.A.R.E.

Matthew Clarke has been selected to serve as a advisor on D.A.R.E. America's Youth Advisory Board! The Youth Advisory Board (YAB), initiated by D.A.R.E. America in 2000 is composed of 50 members--one student per State in the United States. Students are selected through a statewide search.
The YAB gives D.A.R.E. graduates an opportunity to speak to issues impacting the national and worldwide D.A.R.E. program and to advise D.A.R.E. America and local D.A.R.E. programs, government and community leaders on drug and violence prevention strategies beneficial to our youth.
In addition, the YAB is a working board, leading Peer PLUS Programs, engaging in letter writing and media response, as well as role modeling and speaking at D.A.R.E. functions within their states. Members of the YAB are eligible for the $20,000 D.A.R.E. America Scholarship upon their graduation from high school.
Matthew is a D.A.R.E. graduate from Morningside Elementary School. He attended Leslie Middle School and is currently a freshman at South Salem High School. He has a 3.48 GPA and is a hard worker. His extra activities include football, wrestling, baseball, Boy Scouts, and he is a Police Cadet.
D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. This research based and proven effective program is helping students make good choices and stay safe. The Salem Police Department D.A.R.E. PROTECTING YOUR KIDS FROM VIOLENCE

Violence is defined as a destructive action or force, either intentional or unintentional, against the self, other people, or property. It is also described as abusive power used to dominate or control. As a society, we are increasingly tolerant of a tremendous amount of violence that is constantly bombarding us from the early morning cartoons through the late evening news and beyond. TV shows often portray violence as “the way” of dealing with a problem. The national news often plays up violence as they discuss school shootings, wars, terrorism, etc. Many books and a great deal of pop music glorify violence. The availability of weapons and the limited sentences handed out to criminals through our judicial system make violence almost “the norm” in our country.
Violence is usually expressed in 3 ways: Verbal – through teasing, name calling, slurs, and threats; Mental or Emotional – through non-verbal expression of feelings such as not speaking, excluding others, withholding recognition, or affection for revenge; and Physical – through striking or hitting to inflict bodily harm by the use of physical force, which may include the use of a weapon. There are also 3 kinds of violence that may occur including interpersonal, within groups, and between groups. Interpersonal violence involves two or more people who may be strangers or who may know one another. Sixty percent of all violent acts occur between people who are acquainted. Within groups violence occurs within a group such as a family or other close knit groups. Between groups violence occurs between rival gangs or other groups such as schools or even countries.
Most people think of teen violence as involving gangs. Behavioral warning signs of gang involvement include: hanging out with known gang members or in gang areas, staying out late, showing a lack of interest in school (truancy or dropping out), personality changes, changes in friends, significant decrease or increase in personal finances, fights, or flashing gang signs. Appearance clues to gang involvement include: hairstyle or clothing changes, lacing shoes in a “code” style, shaved heads or wearing headgear in a certain way, or adopting gang jewelry, gangster style fashions and logo emblazoned clothes. Some gangs may use small backpacks to hide spray paint, tags on clothes or other personal items
such as notebooks, tattoos favoring designs depicting violence, death, or a macho orientation.

It’s important for parents to think about safety measures for those homes that have guns. Parents must exercise complete control over any guns at home. All guns should be secured and inaccessible to children. Guns should be stored unloaded. Ammunition should be stored and locked in a separate location. Hunters should be given safety education and training. Remember that kids can also get guns from catalogs, internet/auction sites, illegal “street” sales, and theft. Children should be taught that guns do not solve problems. Guns are dangerous and are NEVER appropriate to play with. There is an enormous difference between the real life use of guns and the fantasy world of violence portrayed in the movies, computer games, or television shows.
Parents can combat violence by making sure your children are supervised. Involving your child in positive after school activities is also a good idea. Never leave young children at home alone, even for a short time. Be sure your child attends and stays at school. Set and keep curfews. Supervise homework and school projects. Call before your child visits another house. Ask if weapons are stored in the home and if they are secured away from the ammunition. Meet your youngster’s friend and if possible, their parents. Encourage your child to avoid places that are risky and to use a buddy system to enjoy “strength in numbers”. Be alert to signs of trouble.
Most parents can probably think of many situations where you can model resistance skills. For instance, refusing to buy from door-to-door sales people; firmly disengaging from telemarketers; passing on dessert at a restaurant; or returning a defective product to a store. Encourage your children to develop this skill early so that they will have more confidence and will command respect among their peers. Make sure to teach children to speak in a clear and confident manner, and maintain good eye contact. Discuss assertiveness and explain the difference between aggressive and assertive behavior: a demanding aggressive response will just provoke fights, while an assertive response is calm and confident. Role-play with your child. Listen and be prepared to coach them on their responses. Stress that everyone has rights: the right to be yourself, to say what you think, and to say no. Understand that assertiveness is not a cure-all for the stresses of growing up, it is just another tool. Teach your child that it is OK to run and get help, if they ever feel in danger and that disagreements are normal. It is the way that disagreements are resolved that is key. Encourage your child to use a buddy system since there is safety in numbers. In your gut, if you feel your child is scared, trust your instincts and teach them to trust their own instincts as well.
You probably remember the unspoken law of adolescence—the keep silent and protect your friends. It still exists, but now the stakes are higher. In most school shootings someone knew of the planning and behaviors that were going on, yet no one spoke up or asked for help.

The new D.A.R.E. curriculum is designed to be taught by police officers whose training and experience give them the background needed to answer the sophisticated questions often posed by young students about drugs and crime. Prior to teaching D.A.R.E., police officers undergo 80 hours of special training in areas such as child development, classroom management, teaching techniques, and communication skills. Keizer Fire Training

The Keizer Fire Department spent some time today on practical fire training. In making preporation for the new city hall, Keizer fire crews had some hands on training on Bailey Rd. NE. as they practice burned a house to the ground. Fire crew was seen demolishing the chimney at about 4:00 p.m. today.

Accident on Hwy 22

This afternoon at around 3:00 p.m. Highway 22 Eastbound into Salem was brought to a crawl. A motor vehcle accident slowed the two lane highway to a crawl. Traffic tried to route through Edgewater Street NW. The ramp at Rosemont Street NW to Highway 22 was closed and blocked by ODOT incident responce truck. Out on the highway was a number of law enforcement, fire, medical, and tow trucks. Comment at the link below.

A NEW DAY FOR OREGON

We just heard from the Secretary of State's office: by the slenderest of margins - less than 1/2 of 1 percent, anti-gay groups have failed in their effort to force a public vote on Oregon's new domestic partnership law.
The fact that they were unable to meet even this extremely low signature threshold shows how out of step they are with Oregon values.
The message is clear: Oregonians believe that committed couples should have the legal recognition they need to take care of each other, especially in a crisis. Come January 1st, when our domestic partnership law goes into effect, that will be the reality in Oregon.
But we're not out of the woods yet. The Secretary of State's office is still counting signatures on the attempt to refer our new nondiscrimination law. We expect to hear more by the end of the week.
And anti-gay groups have vowed to try again, using the initiative process to try to REPEAL the law. This would give them until next July 3rd to collect roughly 82,000 signatures.
So while we celebrate this tremendous victory, we can't let down our guard. We must be prepared to defend these laws at the ballot, enforce them once they go into effect, and elect more fair-minded candidates to public office.
How we won this round
All along, we knew this would be a struggle. No group has ever achieved equal rights without a fight.
When anti-gay groups announced earlier this year that they would attempt to challenge Oregon's new domestic partnership, we got to work right away. Volunteers around the state launched an education campaign. We ran a massive "decline to sign" campaign talking to thousands of Oregonians at summer fairs and festivals.
While they collected signatures for their doomed effort, we signed up thousands of Oregonians who have pledged to defend equality. When they turned in their signatures, we looked through every single petition sheet. And we challenged them at every turn. When the petitions went to the counties for further verification, we spread out across the state and personally observed 65% of the sampling effort. And we challenged them again.
We explored every option. We left no stone unturned. At every step along the way, we ensured that only valid signatures were counted.
And we couldn't have done it without your help. Thank you for your continued support!
We will share news on the signature verification process for the anti-discrimination referendum as soon as we know the outcome - look for something at the end of this week.

SIGNATURE VERIFICATION UPDATE

This week, the Secretary of State's office arrived at an official count of the signatures turned in by opponents of Oregon's recently passed anti-discrimination and domestic partnership laws. According to elections officials, 60,531 signatures were submitted on the domestic partnership referendum, along with 59,791 on the anti-discrimination petition.
55,179 valid signatures are required to qualify a referendum to the ballot in Oregon. A statistical sampling of signatures from each petition is now at or on its way to county clerks for signature verification.
Basic Rights Oregon continues to closely monitor this process. Yesterday, we placed trained volunteer observers in county elections offices to ensure that only the valid signatures of registered voters are counted in the final tally.

ENDA UPDATE: ACT NOW TO SUPPORT AN INCLUSIVE ENDA!
Last week, we asked you to contact Members of Congress urging them support the original, unamended version of the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) which would prohibit workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Hundreds of you responded and sent nearly one thousand e-mails to our elected representatives with a clear message: the LGBT community demands a fully inclusive ENDA.
Congress heard you loud and clear - the plan to amend the original bill was scrapped. But there are now plans to introduce a rival version of the bill that would exclude gender identity and weaken protections for everyone. It is critical that our representatives hear from each of us now to urge them again to SUPPORT the original ENDA--and to oppose any attempts to weaken legislation banning discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
To omit a segment of the community from anti-discrimination legislation is wrong - philosophically, morally and strategically -- and removing protections based on gender identity and expression actually leaves a huge loophole in protection for lesbians, gay men, and bisexual people. If the revised ENDA were to pass, employers could simply fire anyone for expressing their gender in a way that does not conform to gender stereotypes.
Finally, given that our current president is unlikely to sign a law protecting lesbian and gay people from employment discrimination, we are currently facing a choice between standing on principle and losing or abandoning principle and losing. We see only one correct position to take: ENDA must protect all Americans from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.
Please take action today to help ensure that ENDA protects every member of the LGBT community.
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) is a federal bill that would make it illegal to fire, refuse to hire or refuse to promote employees simply based on sexual orientation or gender identity. It would reinforce the principle that employment decisions should be based upon a person's qualifications and job performance.

Susan G. Komen's Race for the Cure

This years event was better than expected as thousand of people turned out for the Race. Seventy-five percent or more of the money raised from this event stays here in the northwest. Multiple events took place this month to support the breast cancer awareness and research. Some of the events were Sleep for the Cure, Drive for the cure, and of course Race for the Cure. Many survivors of the cancer turned out for the events. It seemed that all were pleased with the result of the events outcome.Comment at the link below.
